Nora insisted on giving Gray a ride home when they got back to the office.

“I only live a mile away,” Gray protested.

Nora opened up her car’s passenger-side door at the sidewalk before walking around to the driver’s side. “Yes. I know where you live.”

A warm car and more time with Nora wasn’t a hard sell, and she found herself sliding into the seat without protesting again. “Well, thank you then. I appreciate it.”

Once Nora eased the car onto the road, she glanced at Gray. “I feel like that went decently well.”

Gray nodded. Because really… it had. After Kelsey calmed down, the conversation had started to flow. Gray wouldn’t have thought this possible a year ago, but happy hour was actually more fun with Nora there.

A lot of things were seeming like more fun with Nora around for them these days.

She pushed that thought away.

But the thought she couldn’t push away was how Nora had done a complete one-eighty. “I wasn’t expecting you to apologize to everyone tonight.”

Nora shot her a smile before focusing on the road again. “You showed me in Bermuda that I couldn’t just move forward and pretend like the past hadn’t happened. I was trying to bring that spirit into my relationships with everyone else.”

Right. Everyone else. Because, at the end of the day, Gray’s relationship with Nora wasn’t special. She was just another member of the team, and even if they’d become friendly first, it was a matter of circumstance, not desire, on Nora’s part.

She decided to change the subject to quell the sting of disappointment churning in her stomach. “You said something about walking on eggshells. What was that all about?”

The soft smile on Nora’s face faltered. At a red light, she turned to face Gray, blue eyes sharp as they focused on her face. “Halloween got me thinking about a lot of things.”

Gray exhaled softly, waiting for Nora to continue. She didn’t know whether she would, but she was decidedly curious. She was sure that Nora had a lot of thoughts running around in her head all the time, mostly things she never vocalized.

Even in the darkness, Nora’s bright blue eyes were piercing. Gray watched as she drew her bottom lip into her teeth, mulling over whether to continue. When the light turned green, they started moving, Nora’s eyes trained on the road again.

It wasn’t until they were about a block from Gray’s house that Nora finally spoke again. “My dad wasn’t an easy person to get along with. Neither was my ex, if I really think about it.”

The air was heavy around them, and Gray was almost afraid to breathe, worried that it would disrupt whatever story Nora was on the cusp of telling.

Nora put the car in park in front of Gray’s house, the engine whining softly in the cold air. Everything seemed so loud while she waited. It was hard to explain it, but sometimes things felt important to Gray before they happened. Generally, those things scared her because they meant whatever was happening had the weight to change something.
